Health Hazards of Untreated Sewage Sludge
Untreated sludge can harbor pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and parasites, posing serious health risks if it contaminates water supplies or food crops. Toxic heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, may also accumulate in untreated sludge, leading to long‒term health issues like organ damage or neurological disorders when exposure occurs.
Environmental Hazards of Untreated Sludge
When untreated sludge is improperly disposed of, it can leach harmful substances into soil and water systems, disrupting ecosystems. High concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus can cause algal blooms in water bodies, depleting oxygen levels and killing aquatic life. Additionally, methane emissions from decomposing sludge contribute to climate change.

KEY ASPECTS OF SEWAGE SLUDGE
What is it?
Sewage sludge is the residue that accrues after wastewater treatment in sewage treatment plants. It is made up of organic and inorganic substances, including fats, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and microorganisms. The amount of sewage sludge produced depends on the size of the sewage treatment plant and the quality of the wastewater to be treated.
Why recycling?
The recycling of sewage sludge is a central issue in wastewater management and plays a crucial role in the sustainable use of resources. Sewage sludge is produced during mechanical-biological wastewater treatment and contains valuable nutrients and organic substances. The efficient and environmentally friendly recycling of this material is therefore of great importance.


How to recycle?
The methods can be divided into two main categories:
1.Energy recycling:
Energy recycling includes fermentation (biogas production) and incineration. Remaining sewage sludge can be burned in special plants, with the resulting heat being used to generate energy. This method significantly reduces the volume of the sludge and minimizes landfilling.
2. Material recycling:
This includes use as fertilizer to improve the soil. Because sewage sludge accumulates pollutants from the wastewater its quality largely depends on the quality of the wastewater. Therefore, in our opinion, material recycling may be difficult.
